| What to Ride |
Almost any bicycle will make a good commuter. With that said, you'll probably want to leave your full suspension downhill monster in the garage and go with one of the following chioces:
- Road Bike - This is the natural choice for most people, yet some bikes are better suited for the daily commute than others. Not all road bikes come with braze-ons and bosses to accept fenders and racks. If this is the case, consider a seatpost mounted rack to carry your gear and a set of clip-on fenders to keep you and your bike clean on rainy days.
- Hardtail Mountain Bike - Believe it or not, your trusty old non-suspension mountain bike can make a great commuter ride. Steel or aluminum frames are well suited for the wear and tear of city riding and can be an affordable alternative to a more expensive road bike. Swapping out your knobby tires for some street tires will greatly improve efficiency and reduce rolling resistance, while a pair of bar ends will help you power up any tough climb. Some mountain bikes are also equipped with disc brakes which provide better stopping power and perform better in wet weather.
- Fitness Hybrid - Of the many bikes that fall under the 'hybrid' title, a fitness hybrid such as a Trek FX Series or Specialized Globe make good commuters as well. Another bike that can be mentioned here is a flat-bar road bike. These bikes have road geometries and gear ratios, but have a flat handlebar and complementary shifters like those found on a mountain bike.
- Commuter Specific/ Urban Bicycles - These bikes are designed specifically for your get to work needs. There are many styles of urban commuters. There are dedicated singlespeeds such as the Specialized Langster, as well as bike models that come built as a single or multi geared bike. These bikes include the Trek Portland, Trek Soho, and the Specialized Globe City series, among others.
- Custom Bicycles - It is possible to have our staff custom spec a particular specialty frame of choice or even have a complete bicycle built to meet your body measurements and specific riding criteria from the ground up (this includes a customer built frame!). More costly than a stock bicycle, yet still a cost effective way to get to work and to get that daily exercise in!

GEAR AND ACCESSORIES |
| Helmets |
| Helmets are a NECESSITY.
Helmet technology has improved dramatically over the past
few years, making them much more comfortable than their
predecessors. Helmets range in price from $40-$200. All
helmets we carry are certified safe for bicycle use. As the price
increases the helmet generally becomes lighter and better ventillated. We carry four brands of bicycle helmets: Bell, Giro, Trek, and Specialized. |

| Racks, Rack Bags, and Panniers |
| We carry a variety of rear mounted racks to fit any kind of bike. Our most popular brand of rack is Blackburn. We also carry Old Man Mountain, Topeak, and Trek. For riders who don't want to fit their bike with a bolt-on rack, the Topeak MTX Commuter Rack attaches to the seatpost with a quick release. Bags vary in size and purpose. A simple rack top bag may be all you need. For those who need more carrying capacity, a set of Arkel panniers will do the job. Arkel even features a commuter friendly line of panniers with a padded laptop compartment. |

| Tires |
If you already have road wheels, chances are the tires you have are fit for commuting. One alternative is to substitute a heavy duty tire that will be more puncture resistant. Many companies offer tires with extra flat protection. Continental Tires feature 'Gator Skin' technology, and Specialized has their own 'Armadillo' line, just to name a few.
When converting a mountain bike into a commuter, tire style is a major consideration. Mountain bike tires are great for traction on loose terrain, but on the road those knobby treads become an energy sapping nusaince. Also, mountain tires are quickly worn out when ridden on concrete or pavement. The alternative here is to buy a pair of 26" smooth tread tires. If you look at the picturte below you'll notice the difference in tread pattern. Both of these tires are made for a mountain bike wheel, but the one on the right is made specifically for travel on the road. |

| Lights |
When riding in low light (i.e. early morning or dusk), it is important to have lights. Reflectors are helpful but if you really want to be visible, a headlight and rear flasher are a must. Remember, these lights are not to illuminate the road for the rider, they are meant to make the rider visible to drivers. Lights for this purpose are inexpensive and can save your life. Pictured below is our most popular combination of headlight and tail light for commuting. |
