Training Aids

There have been many advances in cycling technology. The biggest changes have been in training methods. Much research has indicated that training by power (Watts) is much more effective than training by heart rate alone. The best tool to monitor your power output is with a PowerTap wheel.

MUST HAVES

Helmet:

Helmets are a NECESSITY. Helmet technology has improved dramatically over the past few years, making them much more comfortable than their predecessors. Helmets range in price from $30-$200. All helmets we carry are certified for bicycle use. As the price increases the helmet generally becomes lighter, more comfortable and less intrusive.

Gloves:
Everyone should wear gloves. The natural involuntary reaction to falling is to put out ones hands. Investing $25 into a pair of gloves is a much smaller price than the pain of road rash on your palms. Additionally, gloves provide you with a better grip on your handlebars.

Hydration:

Cycling requires coordination and good motor skills. Replenishing your fluids is vital to keeping your skills unimpaired. Hydration products can be anything from a water bottle and cage which can carry as little as 12 oz to a Camel Back that can carry in excess of 100 oz.

Repair Kit:
It is always a good idea to have a mini repair kit with you on every ride. If you don't believe us by now, you will the first time you have to walk home from a bicycle ride. You can buy a nice repair kit for about $35 and a mini pump for $20. This will save you much aggravation in the future and give you piece of mind (something that is hard to put a price on)..

NICE ACCESSORIES

Computer:

Computers tell your speed, distance traveled, maximum speed during the ride, your average speed, and the time of your ride. Some computers can even record your heart rate, display altitude and temperature, and can even download date to your personal computer to help better analyze your performance.

Clipless Pedals:

There are three main advantages to clipless pedals. First, since your foot is attached to the pedal, it enables you to push AND pull on the pedals. Ideally, you spin circles instead of pushing on pedals. Second, the shoes used have an extremely stiff sole which effectively makes the whole sole of the shoe a pedal platform. This reduces foot fatigue, allowing for longer, faster, more comfortable rides. Lastly, in the event of a crash it is easier to clip out of your pedals than to release yourself from a toe clip and strap setup.
